letter to your self
some day you'll remember this kindly.
some day you'll gently wipe tears from your face
without making a sound, without torn pages and stains
without fingers grasping cloth 'til it rips
without rivulets or ice in a white-knuckled grip
waiting - hold your breath - 'til it's gone.
some day you'll remember this gently.
some day you'll just breathe, just observe the day
and it'll get easier to say you're okay
even if you still wipe tears from your eyes
behind closed doors, with slashes through ties,
cold in your hands -
some day you'll remember this softly.
some day you'll say, "I remember you,"
screams lost to the past with your self
trembling fingers making room on the shelf
for a self you no longer are.
some day you'll remember this fondly.
some day you'll look back and say
"I tried. It's not perfect, but it's okay,
that me is still here, safe and sound,
I carry them with me though they're not around
I'm not that same person, but that's okay
they tried their best, and I'm sure some day
we'll be okay, we'll be okay -
kindly, gently, softly, fondly -
we'll be okay.
Some time ago, we started working on a piece inspired by the number Pi (π). It's gone from rough piano to a violin-cello duet over the years! It's still a work in progress, though.
